I hate to be sick! November 6, 2009

Almost everyone has heard about the Swine Flu in Ukraine. It is the reason the schools are closed for three weeks. And it is very sad that many people became ill. Closing the schools may help stop the spread of the germs which cause this flu.

It is easy to be frightened when a large group of people get sick. You may not understand how the sickness is spread or what you  can do to stay healthy.  If you learn about germs, then you can work at avoiding them. If you do not understand what a germ is, you are not alone.

Germs are very tiny organisms that cause diseases. You cannot see them, smell them or feel them. They are so small that you need a microscope to see them.

There are many types of germs, but the one that causes the Swine Flu is called a virus. When the germs that carry viruses enter your body, the viruses go inside your cells and start multiplying. In a short period of time, like maybe a day or two, a few germs can turn into millions.

Virus germs need to live inside living things in order to multiply. They can only live a short period of time outside of living things. But when they are outside living things is when the germs are spread – when the germs are sitting on something and you touch it.

For example, if someone who is sick touches a desk, a pencil, a light switch, a pop can or anything at all, they put their germs on it. If you touch that same desk, pencil  light switch, or pop can the germs are on your hands and fingers.  If you touch your eyes, mouth or nose, which are openings into your body,  with your hands or fingers the germs go inside your body and you may get sick.

Think about this example – a person living in your apartment building has the flu. They touch the same door you use when you come home from school. Their germs are on the door. When you open the door, the germs get on your fingers and hands. Then you rub your tired eyes with your fingers. Or you eat an apple without washing your hands first. Very soon you are sick too.

So how can you avoid touching germs when you cannot see them, feel them or smell them?

Well, you cannot avoid touching germs, but you can stop them from entering your body. You do this by washing your hands with soap and water very often and not touching your eyes, nose and mouth.clean-hands[1]

“That is too easy,” you say! Yes, it is easy, but it is very important. Germs may get on your hands and fingers, but if you wash them away with soap and water, they cannot enter your body.

Germs enter your body through your mouth, eyes and nose…so do not touch your mouth, eyes and nose unless you have first washed your hands.   Do not kiss your friends when you greet them. They may be carrying virus germs and have just not yet become sick yet. Do not eat with your hands without washing them first.

Remember, you cannot avoid touching germs, but you can avoid letting them make a home inside your body and making you sick. Wash those nasty germs away by washing your hands many times a day with soap and water and stay healthy!

Я теж терпіти не можу хворіти. Але щось не дуже віриться, що старанне миття рук порятує від грипу…
